A Quick Guide to Topaz Gemstones

During ancient times, there was an island in the Red Sea called the island of St. John. The island, remote and isolated, was difficult to reach. Stories emerged about a yellow gem that could be found there. This gem became known as topaz.

Today, topaz can be found in igneous rock formations such as granite and rhyolite. The gemstone has been found in a number of geographic locations including the United States, Russia, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, the Czech Republic, Germany, Norway, Pakistan, Italy, Sweden, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, and Nigeria.

With regard to the physical characteristics of topaz, the gemstone exhibits several distinct features. It is both solid and durable, and can be found in a variety of different colors, including colorless, blue (synthetic), brown, orange, gray, yellow, green, pink, and reddish-pink.

Specific color patterns are identified by different names. Imperial topaz is deep golden yellow; champagne topaz is blue and contains shades of light to medium brown. Azotic topaz includes orange and pink; and mystic topaz is multicolored.

In terms of its holistic value, topaz is regarded as both a healing as well as an energizing gemstone. It is believed to increase thought awareness, purify emotions and actions, act as a portal to cosmic awareness, and remove stagnant energy. It is said to be a soothing and empathetic gemstone as well as a promoter of truth and forgiveness.

As a potential medicinal aid, topaz is often thought to assist in overall spiritual as well as physical rejuvenation. It is also said to release tension while advancing joy and happiness. Specifically, the gemstone is invoked to aid in medical issues that include sanity, asthma, gout, blood disorders, tuberculosis, and insomnia.

Because of its durability and relative inexpensiveness, topaz has, over the centuries, become a very popular gemstone. Today it is produced in pieces of jewellery that include rings, bracelets, pendants, necklaces, and earrings.
