Sapphires have been worn ornamentally since antiquity. They have been encrusted into necklaces, bracelets, rings, and earrings. They have been found in papal rings and royal crowns, and have traditionally been given as engagement rings. The value of this gem has extended beyond ornamentation to include their use in optical components, windows, wristwatch crystals, and electronic devices.

This phenomenon means they contain either a six-ray or a twelve-ray star pattern. Yogo sapphires are only found in Yogo Gulch in the United States. They are cornflower blue and exhibit high uniform clarity. They are also able to maintain their color in artificial light.

Other kinds of sapphires are able to change colors: while they appear blue in outdoor light, they appear purple under incandescent indoor light. The presence of iron and titanium are what produce the stones blue shade, though most undergo heat treatment in order to improve or enhance color quality.
