Sapphires have been worn ornamentally since antiquity. They have been encrusted into necklaces, bracelets, rings, and earrings. They have been found in papal rings and royal crowns, and have traditionally been given as engagement rings. The value of this gem has extended beyond ornamentation to include their use in optical components, windows, wristwatch crystals, and electronic devices.

Sapphires have long held their value, and several ancient civilizations regarded these gems, crystals of the mineral corundum, as symbols of power and strength, but also of kindness and wise judgment.

The Ancient Persians, for example, believed the earth rested on a giant sapphire. Consequently, they regarded the sapphire’s reflection as the source for the sky’s brilliant blue color.

Mentions of the gemstone, also referred to as lapis lazuli in ancient times, can be found in Hebrew, Greek, Buddhist, Hindu, and Christian writing. For centuries, sapphires have been regarded as stones of wisdom, royalty, prophesy, and Divine favor. In addition, it is a gem that is emblematic of truth, fidelity, and the soul. Along with diamonds, emeralds, and rubies, sapphires constitute one of the four traditional precious stones of the world. Their strength is only surpassed by diamonds.

Sapphires are most often found in sedimentary rock formations, and the gemstone is often found with its twin gem, the ruby. They can be found in a number of geographic regions, including Madagascar, Australia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, China, East Africa, and the United States. While most stones appear in various shades of blue that range from violet to indigo to cerulean, they can also be colorless, pink, yellow, white, green, and even contain shades of gray and black.

Two of the most unusual types include Star sapphires and Yogo sapphires. These exhibit the physical characteristic called asterism. This phenomenon means they contain either a six-ray or a twelve-ray star pattern. Yogo sapphires are only found in Yogo Gulch in the United States. They are cornflower blue and exhibit high uniform clarity. They are also able to maintain their color in artificial light.

Other kinds of sapphires are able to change colors: while they appear blue in outdoor light, they appear purple under incandescent indoor light. The presence of iron and titanium are what produce the stones blue shade, though most undergo heat treatment in order to improve or enhance color quality.

Holistic properties ascribed to sapphires are quite numerous. These gemstones are reputed to bring order and healing to the mind, strengthen focus, and improve structure as well as self-discipline. The stone is said to promote intellectual, psychic, and spiritual growth.

With regard to the gemstone’s potential as a medicinal aid, sapphires are thought to contribute to the restoration of balance to the body. More specifically, they are invoked for particular issues with eyesight, thyroid, speech, and communication, as well as degenerative diseases. The gem is also thought to reduce inflammations and assist in clearing up various infections.
