The name ruby refers to the red color; it is derived from the Latin word rubeus. Rubies belong to the Corundum mineral group along with sapphires, the difference between the two gemstones is the colour. Rubies must be red; if the stone is pink it is considered a sapphire. The trace element which gives rubies the red color is chrome. They are 1/140th as hard as diamond, even though they rate a 9 on the Moh’s hardness scale.
Rubies may exhibit a phenomenon known as asterism; which is caused by included needles. The stars usually have 6 rays.
It is the designated gemstone for: July, Tuesday, summer, 15th and 40th wedding anniversaries. It is also associated with a specific time of day - 5:00pm. It has been associated with the astrological signs of Leo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Cancer and Sagittarius. And in numerology it has been associated with the number of 3.
