A striking antique Victorian opal ring. This wonderful Victorian ring was hand crafted by maker 'MC' Mary Chawner (registered in London in 1834). Mary Chawner was from a family of skilled silversmiths, she took over her husbands (William Chawner) silversmiths business after his death in 1834. They were a very accomplished and important manufacturer.
After research into the makers mark we estimate the ring to have been made in the late 1830's (probably 1838/1839) The rings shank also features a Duty mark for Queen Victoria (used between 1838-1890) - this is the mark for tax paid to the crown.
In good condition, especially taking into account its considerable age. The shank is slightly misshapen at the base (can't be noticed when worn). The opal has been replaced at sometime in this rings history.
Comes complete with a Victorian celluloid ring box - that seems to be associated with a later resale of the ring in the late 1800's / early 1900's.

Ring size UK M / USA 6¼. This piece can be resized.
